Overview
The IMS-LM series linear motor stages are designed for self-supporting applications with travel ranges from 300 to 1200 mm. The driving element is a centered, high efficiency 3-phase, synchronous, iron core linear motor that provides higher speed, acceleration and system responsiveness without the wear associated with motor brushes or drive screws. These stages offer a high performance yet cost-effective solution for precision industrial applications such as semiconductor wafer inspection, micro-electronics test and assembly, pick and place, DNA sequencing or laser machining. Also, the stand-alone versions of this stage feature 4-point mounting, making them ideal for delay lines and other applications with non-flat mounting surfaces.

Features
Reliable Straightness Over Long Travel Ranges
The IMS-LM stages employ straightness compensation methods to offer improved straightness performance over long travel ranges of up to 1.2 meters. They are designed for self-supporting applications and are a cost-effective solution for precision industrial and laboratory systems.
FEM Optimized Extremely Stiff Aluminum Body
The IMS-LM series utilizes an extremely stiff, FEM optimized extruded aluminum body which minimizes the bi-metal bending effect caused by different thermal expansion coefficients of aluminum and steel. The unique, rigid body design of the IMS-LM provides high motion performance over long distance and reduces deflection under load without compromising on weight.
The high stiffness of the IMS-LM stages results in very short settling times that improve the performance and throughput of many stepping, scanning, and continuous machining processes.
20 nm Minimum Incremental Motion
Precision position feedback is supplied by a highly repeatable linear scale mounted inside the stage. The encoder signals are interpolated by Newport’s XPS motion controller with 20 nm minimum incremental motion for outstanding repeatability and stability. Absolute home position and limit signals are incorporated in the linear scale to improve repeatability and reliability, without additional electronics or mechanical parts for optimal precision.
IMS-LM stages are capable of performing very small incremental motions with high accuracy and reliability.
Non-Contact Drive Linear Motor
The high efficiency, iron-core linear motor has the advantage of higher speed, acceleration and system responsiveness with no wear of motor brushes or drive screws, significantly reducing heat generation. The IMS-LM is the optimum solution for applications that require high-throughput, high reliability, and ultra-quiet operation even when traveling long distances.
Recirculating Ball Bearings Slides
The recirculating ball bearing slides provide excellent payload capabilities and longer life with accurate linear trajectory. It mitigates the issue of ball cage migration, which is typically found on linear ball bearings or crossed roller bearings.
Hard Stoppers
IMS-LM stages use electrical end-of-run and elastomer bumper hard stops to stop the carriage as smoothly as possible past the end-of-runs. The overtravel allowed by the hard stops is 8 mm, and when used with Newport XPS controllers, any commanded motion out of the travel range is not allowed.
Stand Alone Versions
The IMS-LM-SA-S stand-alone versions are for high speed applications over a non-flat mounting surface with a smaller load. Unlike the regular higher load IMS-LM-S versions, the stand-alone stages include 4 mounting pads for non-flat mounting surfaces to maintain its pitch and yaw performance and while supporting up to a 10-kg centered load capacity. They are available in 800
For critical positioning applications, Newport offers error mapping upon request for these linear motor stages driven by our XPS advanced motion controller. We will measure, implement, and verify the results of this error map that will individually optimize each stage's position accuracy. In addition, multi-axis error mapping is also available. Measurements are made at 20.0 ±0.2°C. A certificate of calibration will be provided with your stage. Actual data may also be provided upon request.
Metrology Report Included at No Additional Cost
Newport guarantees specification values which are measured and recorded following ASME B5.57 and ISO 230-2 standards. The typical performance values are two times better than the guaranteed specifications.
