The 6252 Xenon Arc Lamp is a simple drop-in replacement model which requires no alignment. A reflector has been integrated around the filament in order to produce a fully collimated beam. Electrical connection to the source housing is straighforward with a keyed connector in order to avoid installing in reverse polarity. The filament is filled with purified xenon at 5-20 bar, but the pressure will triple during operation. This 100 Watt Xenon lamp, with a 0.4 mm x 0.8 mm effective arc size, operates with the anode at the top.
The small intense arc radiates like 5500-6000 K full illuminators with some xenon lines superimposed. The xenon lines dominate between 750 and 1000 nm, but the spectrum is almost featureless through the ultraviolet and visible. Xenon lamps are popular for demanding absorbance and fluorescence applications involving source spectral scanning, and as high intensity broadband sources. Because of its sun-like spectrum, the xenon lamp is used for solar simulation. Ultraviolet radiation below 242 nm produces toxic ozone. Consider this ozone free lamp if ultraviolet wavelengths below 260 nm are not necessary.
Due to its intense UV spectral output profile below 400 nm, Oriel recommends wearing the necessary safety equipment such as UV protective eyewear. Safety goggles or spectacles are offered separately.
Ozone Free Xenon Lamps
UV wavelength emissions below ~260 nm create toxic ozone. Ideally, an arc lamp is operated outdoors or in a room with adequate ventilation to protect the user from ozone created. If this is not possible, an Ozone Eater should be used. However, if the application does not require wavelength emission below ~260 nm from the arc lamp, using an ozone free lamp is a convenient option. An ozone free lamp is coated to remove the unwanted UV Wavelengths
High Stability Xenon Lamps
High stability Xe arc lamps are made of a higher quality cathode than typically used for xenon arc lamp construction. As a result, no arc wander occurs, allowing the lamp to maintain a consistent output intensity throughout its lifetime.
Xenon Lamp Shelf Life
We recommend purchasing replacement xenon lamps only as needed. Xe arc lamps do have an unspecified shelf life, which over time can cause the end cap seals to leak and degrade lamp performance. Newport strives to keep Xe bulbs in stock to reduce lead times when ordering a replacement.
