Features

All Necessary Components for Lamp Operation Included

Each light source includes an arc lamp, appropriate socket adapter, lamp housing interconnection cable, power supply, and Research Lamp Housing. After a quick and easy assembly, the light source is ready for use and easily integrated into a user's setup. The lamp housings offered with these light source kits are capable of operating all 50-500 W DC arc lamps. This allows the user to interchange lamps in their setup simply by replacing the lamp, socket adapter, lamp housing interconnection cable (if necessary) in their lamp housing.

Three Different 75 W Xe Lamps Offered

Xenon arc lamps have a relatively smooth emission curve in the UV to visible spectrums, with characteristic wavelengths emitted from 750-1000 nm. Their sun-like emission spectrum make them a popular choice for solar simulation, as well as absorption and fluorescence and source spectral scanning applications. Three different 75 W Xe arc lamps are available with these light sources, each with its own unique output traits:

  • 6251NS : Standard
  • 6247 : High Stability
  • 6263 : Ozone Free

The 6247 lamp contains a higher quality cathode than typically used in Xe arc lamps. As a result, no arc wander occurs, allowing the lamp to maintain a consistent output intensity throughout its lifetime. The 6263 ozone free lamp is a safe option for users that do not require wavelength emission 260 nm output from the lamp.

100 W Xe Lamp Option

The 6257 100 W Ozone Free Xe arc lamp is an option with these light source kits.

Two Different 150 W Xe Lamps Offered

Two 150 W Xe arc lamps with the following specialty characteristics are offered:

  • 6254 : UV-Enhanced
  • 6255 : Ozone Free The 6254 150 W UV Enhanced Xe lamp is a useful option for those who need the visible to NIR performance of a Xe lamp without the drop in UV light output typical of a Xe arc lamp.

High Stability Arc Lamp Power Supply

The OPS-A150 power supply provided with these light sources is a highly regulated power supply. Much of an arc lamp's stability in wavelength and output intensity is due to keeping the temperature and pressure of the gas inside the lamp's envelope as constant possible. The OPS-A150 power supply provides highly stable voltage and current supply to the arc lamp, keeping the arc lamp's ripple to less than 0.5% rms while maximizing the lifetime of the lamp.

Oriel Research Arc Lamp Housing

All Oriel Research Arc Lamp Housings include a built-in ignitor board and rear reflector for optimum lamp performance. A built-in cooling fan maintains a safe operating temperature for the lamp. The user is protected from accidental exposure to UV radiation and electrical shock by the lamp housing's safety interlock, which disables ignition and power to the lamp if the housing door or lamp housing interconnection cable is not securely connected. These five lamp housing options differ in the condenser lens assembly mounted. Condenser lens assemblies differ in the type of lens used and F/#.

F/1 Plano Convex Lens Option

Light sources with the R11 suffix include the model 66902 light source housing which contains a two element Plano Convex lens configuration with an F/# of F/1.

F/0.7 Four Element Aspherab Len Option

Light sources with the R07 suffix include the model 66905 light source housing which contains a high performance F/0.7 Four Element Fused Silica Aspherab condenser for a 2.7 inch (69 mm) diameter collimated output beam. This lamp housing uses a larger 3 inch flange on the output for a greater irradiation area.  The small F/# means the lens is placed closer to the light source inside the lamp housing. This allows for greater radiant flux as more light is collected by the lens. This Aspherab™ lens configuration provides the highest quality output light. Four different lenses are used in a unique configuration to provide light output that is nearly free from spherical aberration.

F/2.2 Aspheric Lens Option

Light sources with the R22 suffix include the model 67001 light source housing offering an F/2.2 single element aspheric lens configuration. The front surface of an aspheric lens gradually changes in curvature from the center of the lens to the edge. This shape reduces spherical aberration more effectively than a plano-convex lens. Higher F/#'s are suggested if a high quality collimated beam is needed from the output of the lamp housing.

F/1 Aspheric Lens Option

Light sources with the R1 suffix include the model 67005 light source housing offering an F/1 single element aspheric lens configuration. The front surface of an aspheric lens gradually changes in curvature from the center of the lens to the edge. This shape reduces spherical aberration more effectively than a plano-convex lens.

F/1.5 Plano Convex Option

Light sources with the R15 suffix include the model 66901 light source housing which contains an economical F/1.5 plano-convex lens.

Arc Lamp Safety

Arc lamps may emit dangerous levels of UV radiation depending on their source type. Ensure that only authorized personnel are in the vicinity of the source, and wearing the necessary safety equipment such as UV protective eyewear, clothing, and gloves. Lighted UV warning signs, posted outside laboratory doors where UV sources are operating, can prevent accidental exposure. Newport also recommends using an electronic shutter to block the beam when the source is not in use but remains turned on. Alternatively, the beam can be safely contained by using beam tubes or fiber optic cables to deliver the light to a sample. It is recommended to vent the ozone that is produced by some lamp models to the outside or use an Ozone Eater.
