Resolution test targets are designed to quantitatively test optical system performance as well as provide length calibration for microscopy. These targets consist of groups of line-space patterns whose spatial frequency increases as the sixth root of two.

Resolution Test Target Standards
An element is defined as a set of 3 horizontal bars and 3 vertical bars of the same size. The resolution of the set is defined by the number next to the bar. The group number will specify the size category. Each element has a set resolution based on which group the element belongs to. The resolution of an imaging system under test is defined to be the smallest element size before the lines become indistinguishable. This is based on U.S. Air Force MIL-STD-150A Standard of 1951.
Glass Test Target
The RES-1 target is a 50 x 50 x 1.5 mm optical glass substrate with clear lines on an opaque background. It can be used in transmission and is easily held in FH-2S
Our RES-2 resolution test targets are black line emulsion on heavy 50 x 50 mm white paper positives. They are ideal for photo lens testing and are a less expensive alternative to the RES-1. Please note that for RES-2, the printing of higher resolution groups beyond Group 4 – Element 4 is done on a best effort basis. Because the grain structure of the paper substrate is unable to support the smaller features, the lines pairs become indiscernible at the higher resolutions. For the most stringent applications, please choose RES-1.
