Ignite and Operate Deuterium Lamps

Deuterium lamps require filament power and anode-cathode voltage of at least 350 V to initiate the discharge and then, for best performance a carefully regulated discharge current. Until the deuterium lamp reaches thermal equilibrium, the radiated output varies. After approximately 10 to 15 minutes, the output will be almost completely stable. For applications requiring extreme stability, an additional 15 to 30 minutes of warm-up may be required. This is particularly important when using the 63345 Calibrated Lamp.

Highly Regulated Power Supply

The 68942 operates deuterium lamps in constant current mode. Oriel's deuterium lamps typically require 300 mA of input current. Users can adjust the lamp supply current of the 68942 up to 550 mA to achieve maximum brightness at the cost of decreased lifetime. The current supplied to the lamp is highly stable, allowing Oriel's deuterium lamps to keep light ripple under 0.2% to 0.5% peak to peak maximum.

Safety Considerations

Deuterium lamps emit high intensity ultraviolet radiation. Always use Ultraviolet Safety Equipment like protective eyewear, clothing, and gloves when working in the vicinity of these lamps.
