New! The new broadband optical isolator Model ISO-05-800-BB replaces the obsolete ISO-05-800-BB-G and ISO-05-800-BB-P.
A Faraday Optical Isolator is essentially a magneto-optic device working like a uni-directional light valve. Use it to protect a laser source from destabilizing feedback or actual damage from back-reflected light. Newport offers free space optical isolators packaged in a compact cylinder with a base plate for ease of mounting into an optical train. Our optical isolator offering includes:
LP Series low-power (630 - 1030 nm)
MP Series medium-power (500 - 1030 nm)
ISO-FRDY Series high power (wavelength range 1013 - 1077 nm)
Broadband (720 - 950 nm) for Ti:Sapphire tuning range
The -W suffix in each model indicates an added 1/2 wave plate at the output stage so that the direction of the output beam polarization can be rotated to a desired direction.
The LP Series utilizes field proven, high efficiency Corning Polarcor polarizers ideal for laser diode applications. The MP Series uses a higher damage threshold BK-7 polarizing beamsplitter (PBS) and provides double escape ports for applications where rejected power exceeds 0.5 W. The ISO-FRDY Series offers high pulse damage thresholds in the NIR range.
The broadband Faraday isolator is ideal for individual amplifier isolation in a Ti:Sapphire chain while maintaining the ability to tune rapidly over the amplifier bandwidth or isolating a femtosecond oscillator from a Ti:Sapphire regenerative amplifier. It provides the advantage of operating over a wide spectral range without requiring manual adjustments.

1. Polarization Orientation: Please note that the broadband rotators and isolators utilize a 45° crystal quartz rotator. At the center wavelength there will be ≈ 90° polarization rotation in the forward direction. In the reverse direction, there will be ≈ 0° polarization rotation across the entire spectral bandwidth of the device.
2. Dispersion: Some pulse broadening does occur when using Newport's broadband isolator. Use the following Sellmeier Equation to calculate the dispersion in the Terbium Gallium Garnet material:
3. Operating and Storage Temperature: Performance of Newport's broadband rotators/isolators is related to operating temperature.

1. Operating Temperature: Performance of Newport's Faraday isolators is related to operating temperature. For information on the effect of operating temperature, please refer to the product support tab at Newport's website or contact us directly.
2. Escape Ports: All high power 10301080 nm isolators come standard with double escape ports on both the input and output polarizer assemblies. These escape ports can be adjusted by the customer to be either open or closed. If rejected average power exceeds 0.5 W or rejected energy exceeds 50 mJ (10 ns pulse), Newport recommends the escape ports be used. Failure to use the escape ports under these conditions could result in optical damage or degrade the performance of your isolator. Please consult Users Guide on how to use the escape ports.
3. Newport's Faraday isolators provide ≥30 dB isolation for beams having a 1/e2 beam diameter ≤2/3 of the clear aperture.
4. To order with a 1/2 waveplate use -W extension.
