The Beam Pickoff with Brewster Angle Prisms for Dispersion Compensation setup is a precision optical configuration designed to optimize beam routing in ultrafast laser systems. With reflective coatings extending near the flat edge of the mirror, this setup enables close separation of incoming and outgoing beams which are ideal for folded prism compressor geometries. By allowing beams to travel in the same vertical plane and be efficiently redirected, D-shaped mirrors improve spatial compactness and routing accuracy compared to traditional round mirrors.

When light propagates through various media, the spectral components that make up the pulse do not propagate at the same speed, causing Group Delay Dispersion (GDD). Using a sequence of prisms, this setup can induce negative GDD that can compensate for the natural positive GDD for a net value of zero, effectively compressing the pulse, compensating for the chirp that is present alongside a very short pulse. The folded mirror design allows for use of only two prisms, instead of four. By changing prism separation and prism glass, the amount of GDD accounted for can be varied.
