66505 Simplicity Series QTH Source

We designed this family of QTH Sources to offer Researchers and Systems Integrators not requiring all the features of our Research Systems, a more economical choice. We named this family the Simplicity Series because of its ease of use. The power supply is factory pre-set for the specified lamp so there are no power supply settings - only an ON/OFF switch. This limits the versatility of the system, as you can only run the specified lamp, but reduces the cost. We also removed some of the power supply’s user features, but maintained the same superior stability performance of the supply.

Why These Sources?

We offer a much larger selection of QTH sources than ever before, and the choices can be confusing. In Table 1 we list a quick overview, to guide you in your selection.

Economical Option

For many applications, the versatility of a Research QTH Lamp System is not a requirement. If you have a fixed lamp application, and do not need the features described below, the Simplicity Series Sources are a smart alternative. The significant differences between these sources and our Fully Featured models are:
  • Fixed Lamp Operation
  • Each source includes a power supply that is factory pre-set to operate a specific lamp - no need to set the voltage, current, or power. In fact, the only control on the power supply is an On-Off switch. If your application does not necessitate interchanging lamps, these systems are suitable.
  • Highly Stable Output
  • These sources are just as stable as the Oriel Research Systems. However, for critical applications requiring the optional Light Intensity Control System (in order to compensate for factors beyond the power supply's control such as lamp aging and temperature changes), choose a Research Model. The Simplicity Series systems do not operate the Light Intensity Control System
  • Lamp Usage
  • One of the features we removed, in order to keep the costs of these sources down, was the ability to monitor the lamp's usage (in accumulated lamp hours).
  • Factory Pre-set Parameters
  • Because the power supply is factory pre-set to run the specified lamp, we eliminated the ability to adjust and display the lamp's operating parameters. Equally, you cannot save set-ups for multiple lamps.

What Makes Up These Sources?

These systems come complete with all the necessary components to begin work. They include:
  • Lamp Housing with an F/1.0 or F/0.85 condenser
  • Power supply pre-set to specified lamp
  • QTH lamp and socket adapter
  • All necessary cables and mounting hardware

Lamp Housing

The lamp housing is an aluminum enclosure; it holds the lamp and collecting and collimating optics. The lamp is held by a socket adapter, which places the filament on the condenser axis. Lamp adjusters, located on the outside of the housing, let you precisely adjust the position to compensate for lamp tolerances.

The lamp housing condenser is a fused silica F/1 or Pyrex F/0.85 asphere. The output beam is 1.3 or 1.9 inches (33 or 48 mm) in diameter, depending upon the condenser and wattage of the system. We describe the housing in detail, here .

Power Supply

The power supply runs the specified lamp at the lamp's rated current or power. Output stability is impressive; line regulation is 0.01% and light ripple is <0.05%.

Quartz Tungsten Halogen Lamps

These sources operate our 50 - 1000 W QTH lamps. Choose the system based on the irradiance required. For guidance in calculating the output power from the source, refer to our tutorial on Calculating Output Power.

Upgrading for More Versatility

By replacing the power supplies, you can achieve more versatility, for example, multiple lamp operation and compatibility with Oriel® Light Intensity Controller see Digital Light Intensity Controller, just to name a few. The power supplies are field replaceable.

Extended Care Plan

All our sources have a year warranty. You can now extend the warranty period by another year through our Extended Care Plan; contact our Sales Dept for details.

Mounting

The housings have adjustable height instrument feet. You can remove them and hard mount the housing to an inch (1/4-20) or metric (M6) optical table or base plate. You can also mount selected housings to a bench or rail; you will need the 66075 Carrier Mounting Kit. The kit includes a clamping carrier and a base plate for the housing.

Safety Considerations

These sources emit UV radiation, particularly the F/1 models which use a fused silica condenser. Always use proper eye and skin protection when working around ultraviolet sources.
