Selecting an Optical Mount
|
The mounts listed here are primarily intended for holding and adjusting mirrors, beamsplitters, lenses and other round, thin optics. Newport offers an extensive array of such products, from inexpensive, fixed mounts to sophisticated five-axis adjustable units. In order to select the optimum product for your application, the main factors to consider are adjustment type, transmission capability and mechanical interface.

|
Adjustment Type
|
Kinematic mounting is the most commonly used approach for providing two-axis (θx,θy) rotational adjustment in optical mounts. In a kinematic mount, the center of rotation is located somewhat off the optic surface. As a result, any adjustment usually results in both angular movement and translation of the reflected/transmitted light. Furthermore, the adjustment axes are not completely independent in a kinematic mount.
Gimbal mounts imply that the center of rotation is located at the geometrical center and on the front surface of the optical component. They are typically used when even small changes in optical path length are critical. Gimbal mounts are usually more mechanically complex, and thus more costly than kinematic mounts. For a more detailed explanation on this topic, see Introduction to Positioning Equipment.

Transmission Capability
|
Mounts with a clear aperture can be used with transmissive components such as beamsplitters, filters and lenses. Platform style mounts have solid front plates, and can be used with reflective optics and as tilt platforms for components mounted to the surface - such as prisms and beamsplitter cubes.

SUPREMA® Series: (Part numbers beginning with S) SUPREMA sets the performance standard in a modular precision optical mount for today's demanding research, development, and industrial OEM applications. All design elements: form, fit, and function, are optimized to create a kinematic optical mount that is configurable and adjustable while providing rock-solid stability and reliability. Mount induced thermal drift has been all but eliminated.
ULTIMA® Series: (Part numbers beginning with U) One of our finest optical mounts, the ULTIMA Series features excellent stability and high-resolution. These mounts utilize interchangeable actuators, and have numerous accessories to achieve a wide variety of mechanical configurations.
VIZIX Series: (Part numbers beginning with a V or P) These are new cost effective optical mounts that deliver the performance and functionality required for most common applications
PERFORMA-i Series Optical Mounts have been optimized for industrial OEM applications requiring precise angular adjustment, high stability, and set, lock, and forget capability.
HVM-Series: This mount is driven by adjustments protruding from either the top or side of the unit rather than from the back, and offers a convenient mechanical alternative where access or space is limited.
625 Series: The 625 Series mounts are exceptionally thermally and mechanically stable mounts compatible with our 1.5 in. diameter rod system; they are ideal for larger (26 in.) mirrors.
600A Series: In addition to tilt motions, a third actuator can be used with this mount to achieve translation adjustment. The 600A Series can be used with a variety of actuators, including motorized drives; they are ideal for use with 24 in. optics.
