These right-angle prisms are precision polished to tight tolerances for more demanding applications. They are available in either BK 7 or UV grade fused silica. BK 7 prisms are recommended for general laboratory use in the visible and near IR. For UV, infrared, or thermally sensitive applications fused silica prisms are advised. Our fused silica prisms are manufactured to exacting specifications and are useful from 185 nm2.1 µm.VALUMAX® right-angle prisms are ideal for beam bending and retroreflection applications. They are often used instead of mirrors in applications where deformation of the reflective surface may cause a problem. The fine balance between performance and cost has been optimized, making these prisms ideal for OEM applications in the visible and near infrared regions.By means of total internal reflection (TIR), a right-angle prism may be used as a 90° reflector or as a 180° retroreflector. Except for reflection losses from the entry and exit faces, TIR exhibits 100% reflectivity over a very broad wavelength range. The reflecting surface should be coated with protected aluminum if the incidence angle exceeds that acceptable for TIR or if the environment does not allow the reflecting surface to be kept clean, as TIR requires. The hypotenuse can also be used as a first surface reflector. In this case, the overcoat of black paint should be removed with acetone (applicable to BRP- series only).Right-angle prisms are available in many different sizes from 3.20 mm to 50.8 mm with a selection of antireflection coatings. The antireflection coatings reduce surface losses yet do not affect total internal reflection or the acceptance angle. Hence, maximum versatility is achieved by coating all prism faces.
