These are inexpensive sources of high brightness, VIS radiation. The output is a focused spot ~10 mm in diameter. These sources are widely used for illumination of large core fiber bundles and liquid light guides. Because the spot size is so large, these are not the most efficient fiber illuminators, and are not usable with small core fibers, but they are economical and simple. The lamps are 12 V quartz tungsten halogen lamps with a dichroic reflector surrounding the lamp envelope. The reflector collects the lamp radiation and produces a high intensity spot in front of the reflector (see Fig. 2). We offer two lamp types, differing in spectral output and output power.
Dichroic Coatings
The dichroic coating on the reflectors transmits much of the infrared radiation while reflecting the UV and VIS. We offer two coating types with slightly different reflectance bands, for different output spectra. See Fig. 1.

Rod Mounted Lamp Housing
The 69358 is specially designed to hold these lamps. It is a 3.5-inch (89 mm) diameter cylinder with 2.5-inch (64 mm) aperture. The lamp mounts to the socket on the back plate of the housing. It is recessed and completely enclosed on three sides for safety. The lamp is easily inserted and removed from the housing. A 1/4 - 20 tapped hole in the bottom of the housing accepts an optical rod; this enables height adjustment of the optical axis.
Power Sources
The lamp housing includes a 6 ft. (1.8 m) long cable to connect to one of the following power sources:
- 68938 Lab Supply (Displays current and voltage, <0.4% light ripple)
- 69931 Radiometric Power Supply (Highly regulated constant current, <0.05% light ripple)
Inexpensive Fiber Bundle Illuminators
If you want a low cost, visible fiber optic illuminator with reduced IR, consider one of these sources. The dichroic reflectors cannot produce a very tight image of the filament, and are therefore not our most efficient fiber optic illuminators, but serve the purpose if you are concerned about economy and simplicity. For a more efficient fiber illuminator, see our Apex Fiber Illuminators.
Safety Considerations
These lamps have some UV output that can be harmful to the eyes. We recommend that you use Ultraviolet Safety Equipment. The lamp housings become very hot after ~15 minutes. Do not touch the surface of the housing, and allow the housing to cool down before changing lamps.
