Newport's updated Projects in Fiber Optics is a self-paced but comprehensive technical course composed of ten application modules. Developed by Newport’s technical staff working with professional educators, it provides hands-on experience in various fiber optic topics such as optical fiber communication and sensing. Its flexible, modular approach makes it ideal both as an elective course for students and as an independent study program for skilled technicians and engineers.
Newport’s informative Fiber Optics Project Workbook (FKP-TEXT-A) includes a tutorial introduction to fiber optics principles and thorough descriptions of each project. You will find comprehensive, clearly written discussions of fundamental fiber properties and applications. Each project includes step-by-step instructions, illustrated discussions of background and theory, and references for further study.
All the essential equipment is provided: lasers, positioners, fibers and tools. The kit provides a good foundation for a modern fiber optics laboratory. The projects are also available in application-specific subsets: The Introductory Kit (FKP-INT), Communications Kit (FKP-COM), or the standard, Full Kit (FKP-STD). These kits now come standard with Newport's 1918-R Power Meter, and 918D series detectors. Choose the -NN versions if you already have the required power meters and detectors for the projects. An optical breadboard is sold separately.

1	Handling Fibers; Numerical Aperture	Learn to prepare fiber ends for use. Observe the geometry of fibers to understand the concept of numerical aperture, and measure it.
2	Fiber Attenuation	Measure the attenuation per unit length of a multimode communications-grade fiber using the “cutback” method.
3	Single-Mode Fibers I	Study the modal properties of fibers and the unique characteristics of single-mode fibers. Couple laser light into a single-mode fiber and measure the far-field power distribution.
4	Single-Mode Fibers II	Continue to explore single and few-mode fibers which have a small V-number. Measure the beat length of a polarization-preserving fiber.
5	Coupling Fibers to Semiconductor Sources	Learn to couple semiconductor sources (ILDs and LEDs) to optical fibers; measure the electrical and optical characteristics of these sources and learn their differences.
6	Connectors and Splices	Examine the problem of connecting fibers to fibers, including mateable-demateable connectors and permanent splices. Explore the effects of misalignments on the coupling.
7	Components for Fiber Communications	Learn about components used to build fiber data distribution systems; focusing on the fused bidirectional coupler and the wavelength division multiplexer. Understand the importance of fiber parameters such as loss, splitting ratio, directivity, and crosstalk.
8	Fiber Optic Communications Link	Construct a fiber optic communications link: learn how to take two analog inputs, wavelength division multiplex them onto a single fiber, and demultiplex them.
9	Multimode Intensity Sensors	Measure several physical parameters using fiber optic sensors which exploit the optical properties of multimode fibers.
10	Single-Mode Interferometric Sensors	Construct a single-mode interferometric sensor to measure changes in temperature and pressure. Study the sensitivity and resolution of these devices.
