The Fibercore Bow-tie polarization maintaining (PM) fibers, also known as highly birefringent (HiBi) fibers, are optimized for operation at 488/514, 633, 820 and 1300/1550 nm wavelengths and have a beat-length of less than 2 mm. The beat-length, the length over which the fiber polarization rotates through 360°, is one of the fundamental performance measures: the shorter the beat-length, the better the polarization-preserving properties of the fiber. The F-SPPC-13 and F-SPPC-15 fibers are polarization preserving fibers specifically made to be compatible with standard telecom fibers and PANDA™ PM fibers. Splicing these fibers to PANDA™ fibers routinely results in a splicing loss of <0.2 dB and an excellent extinction ratio of -32 dB.

Corning's PANDA™ polarization maintaining fibers offer low attenuation and excellent birefringence for high performance applications. The operating wavelengths range from 400-1500 nm with beat lengths ranging from less than 1.7mm to 5mm. Both the Bow-tie and the PANDA™ PM fiber have a step index profile. Also available are standard FC/APC PM patchcords, whose slow axis is accurately aligned to the connector key. In addition Newport provides custom patch cords with any available termination type at either end.

Polarization Preserving Fiber


“Bow-Tie” cladding preserves polarization with stress-induced intrinsic birefringence. The fast axis is oriented horizontally.
