Modular Lamp Housing

PhotoMax™ is attractive to researchers because of its versatility. To provide this versatility, we made PhotoMax™ a modular lamp housing. We offer a choice of components; selection is based on the application. Table 1 lists the sources, with necessary mounting accessories, that can be operated in PhotoMax™. An interface kit and a socket adapter are required; you can interchange lamps, within each lamp family, by simply changing socket adapters. To switch between lamp families, you’ll need a different interface kit.

Two Shapes of Reflectors

Two ellipses are offered for PhotoMax™, to match the input cone of Newport’s Oriel® 1/8 and 1/4 m Monochromators. The ellipses are water-cooled. An aluminum cylinder, attached to the ellipse, holds the water and comes with two fittings to connect to a water recirculator or tap, with standard 0.125-inch (3.2 mm) ID tubing. Water-cooling ensures long life, even with the highest power lamps, and prevents thermal distortion of the reflector.

Table 2 Reflector Specifications
F/#  Matched To  Spot Size*  Reflector Coating  Reflector Multiplier**  Model
 F/3.7  1/8 m Monochromators  4.6 mm  Rhodium  0.9  60111
 AIMgF2  0.9  60109
 F/4.4  1/4 m Monochromators  5.2 mm  Rhodium  0.8  60110
 AIMgF2  0.8  60108

Reflector Coatings

We offer two reflector coatings: the durable rhodium coating has good visible and excellent infrared reflectivity. Reflectors coated with aluminum with a protective magnesium fluoride (MgF2) overcoat give better performance in the UV and VIS.

Water-Cooling and Thermal Sensors

PhotoMax™ uses water to remove heat from the ellipse and from arc lamps (QTH lamps and the 6575 IR Element do not require water-cooling). The ellipsoidal reflectors and arc lamp interface kit include a reservoir for the water, the proper hose fittings and a pressure reducer. A thermal sensing interlock turns off any connected Oriel Power Supply in the event of overheating due to blockage of water flow.

If you have access to clean tap water, you may use it. A flow of 0.25 liters (0.5 pint) of water (at <18°C (65°F) per minute at 30 PSI is adequate. We recommend you use awater filter to prevent build-up of organic or mineral contaminants. Input water connections are for 0.125-inch (3.2 mm) ID tubing. If you do not have access to clean tap water, you will need to use a Recirculating Cooler.

Power Sources

The interface kits include the necessary cables to connect to the appropriate power source. The power source must be ordered separately.

60130 Beam Turning Assembly and 60143 Table Mounting Kit

The combination of 60130 Beam Turning Assembly (with reflector) and 60143 Table Mounting Kit lets you mount PhotoMax™ vertically, to an inch or metric optical table, while keeping the output horizontal.

The 60130 Assembly houses a full reflector or dichroic mirror that turns the beam 90° (order the dichroic or reflector separately). You can easily interchange optics for different spectral bands.

Fig. 1 PhotoMax™ mounted horizontally. The output of the PhotoMax™ is a 3 inch series male flange. You can convert this to a female flange, or a smaller series of male flange with an adapter.. We also offer afilter holder that mounts directly to the output of the PhotoMax™.
