IS Series Minispectrometer

Superior UV Performance

One of our design criteria was to ensure superior UV performance. After exhaustive testing of numerous arrays, we chose a Si NMOS photodiode array, which has a broad spectral response, excellent sensitivity in the ultraviolet range, and lower cross talk than most other arrays. Because these PDAs have inherently good UV performance, they do not require a UV enhancement coating, which is often used on CCDs, and is prone to degradation over time. The result is a minispectrometer that outperforms traditional CCD-based instruments, particularly in the UV (see Fig. 1), and whose performance does not degrade over time.

Low Stray Light

The 195 to 250 nm wavelength range is a critical spectral region for DUV spectroscopy. Since the measured signal is often quite low in this range, a low stray light instrument is necessary to ensure accurate measurements. Fiber-coupled spectrometers often suffer from an optical mismatch between the fiber optic’s numerical aperture and the spectrometer’s aperture. This results in sensitivity loss. The Oriel IS-Series are F/# matched to ensure high dynamic range and sensitivity. The F/# of the high resolution instruments is F/3.7; the moderate resolution models are F/2.6 instruments. A combination of internal apertures, well matched optics, and wall finish, lowers stray light.

Options for Order Sorting Filters

Our high resolution IS Minispectrometers have an integrated filter slide, which holds 1.0 inch (25.4 mm) diameter order sorting filters. The filter slide is on the inside of the instrument's housing; filter insertion and removal is quick and easy. For the moderate resolution 190 - 800 nm instrument, we apply a proprietary order sorting film directly onto the photodiode detector. The standard 400 - 1000 nm version does not come with an order sorting filter but it is available as an order option. Please contact a Newport sales engineer for more details.

Fiber-Coupled and Free-Space Models

Most minispectrometers on the market are fiber-based instruments. We recognize the advantage of using fibers to deliver the light, but we also recognize their limitations. Direct access to the slit lets you easily and inexpensively change resolution and throughput. It also offers greater flexibility in launching light into the spectrometer, which is important for many Systems Integrators.

Our fiber based instruments have an SMA connector; you must order the fiber separately. The free space instruments have a 1.5 Inch Series males flange input; they accept any 1.5 Inch Series female flanged accessory.

Fiber Coupled Minispectrometers

The fiber-based minispectrometers have an SMA connector, which accepts any properly terminated fiber. We offer standard fused silica fibers and solarization resistant fibers. If you are working below 260 nm, we recommend using a solarization resistant fiber to ensure continued UV transmittance. A fiber is not included with the spectrometer and should be ordered separately.

Free-Space Minispectrometers

The free-space instruments include our stardard 1.5 Inch Series male flange, with a 10 or 25 µm slit (model dependent). Any Oriel 1.5 Inch Series female flanged accessory mates directly to the input, including a fiber optics holder, if you want the option of alternating between free space and fiber coupled.

Sampling Accessories

We offer various sampling accessories for these minispectrometers; these include cuvette holders, integrating spheres, cosine corrector, sampling probes and collimating assemblies.

Plug and Play Instruments

IS Minispectrometers come standard with a USB 2.0 interface. Data acquisition is simplified through the LabVIEWTM based TRACQ BASICTM Spectroscopy application. Also included are USB drivers. The software runs under Windows XP. Data can be exported into most MS applications

Mounting

To hard mount the 78355 - 78358 IS Minispectrometers to an inch or metric optical table, order the optional 78353 Mounting Plate. This plate raises the optical axis height of the instrument by 0.25 inch (6.4 mm).

The 78347 - 78348 models have 1/4-20 tapped holes in the bottom of the housing for rod mounting.

Slits

The default slit size for the 7835X models is 25 µm. For the 7834X high resolution models, the standard slit size is 10 µm.
