Oriel® Monochromator Illuminators are broadband sources with focused outputs matched to 1/8 and 1/4 m Monochromators. We kept the design simple and the size compact to ensure an economical price without compromising performance, stability and safety. We offer four families of Apex Monochromator Illuminators to run deuterium lamps, arc lamps, quartz tungsten halogen lamps, and infrared elements.
Fully Integrated, Fixed Operation
Oriel Illuminators are fully integrated - the power supply, ignitor (for the arc lamp models), filter slide and optics are in a single enclosure. We ship the units with the power supply factory pre-set to operate the selected lamp at the proper voltage and current. Because these systems are factory preset, you cannot switch between lamp types (except for the deuterium systems), but you can replace the lamp (or IR element) when it ages.

Principle of Operation
Fig. 1 shows the optical path of an Apex Arc Lamp Illuminator (other versions operate in the same manner). An off-axis F/4 corrected mirror collects the lamp radiation in its path, and creates a magnified image of the source, in front of the illuminator housing. A mirror was chosen to prevent chromatic aberrations and ensure proper spectrometer tuning. It is coated with AlMgF2 for high reflectance over the 200 nm to 40 mm region. The aperture of the mirror is matched to the monochromator grating. Our 1/8 and 1/4 m monochromators have F/#s of 3.7 to 4.4, model dependent.
The focused source image is 3.63 inches (92.2 mm) in front of the illuminator's output flange (±1.0 inch (±25 mm). This leaves enough room for an optical chopper, in the beam path. The magnification of the mirror is approximately 1.8.
No Lamp Adjustments Required
The lamp or IR element is held in a fixed position at the proper optical axis height and distance from the mirror. Simply place the source in the mount and tighten to lock in place - no other lamp adjustments are necessary. To focus the source image, the focusing mirror can be adjusted in the X, Y and Z directions. Very fine 80 pitched adjusting screws allow precise movement. A locking ring locks the position, preventing accidental disturbances.

Choose Between 19 Source Types
We offer four families of Apex Monochromator Illuminators, and various models within each family. Table 1 shows the sources available.
- Deuterium Apex Illuminators Cover the ~200 to 400 nm spectral range
- Arc Lamp Apex Illuminators Cover the ~200 to 2500 nm spectral range
- Quartz Tungsten Halogen Lamp Apex Illuminators Cover the ~250 to 3000 nm spectral range
- IR Element Apex Illuminators Cover the ~1 to 25 µm spectral range
Ozone Free Models are Standard
The Arc Lamp Systems are shipped with ozone free lamps. If you require shorter wavelengths, contact a Sales Engineer to replace the lamp with a deep UV model (below 260 nm).

Built-in Filter Wheel or Slide
All Apex Monochromator Illuminators include a four position filter holder - either a manually operated filter slide or a motorized filter wheel. We offer the economical filter slide for all sources, and the motorized version for our most popular sources.
Manual Filter Slide
The filter slide holds four 1.0-inch (25.4 mm) diameter order sorting or neutral density filters up to 0.20 inches (5 mm) thick. The filters are pre-loaded into the slide, and the assembly inserted into the illuminator housing. The housing cover does not need to be removed. Insertion and removal of the slide is via a convenient pop-up lever located on the top of the housing. A safety interlock protects the user from accidental exposure to UV radiation. When the filter slide is removed, power is shut down. The filter slide must be in place, even if there are no loaded filters, in order for the illuminator to operate. Each filter position is clearly labeled.
For users requiring more than four filters, we offer the filter slide assembly as a separate unit, so you can load additional filters in the assembly, and interchange assemblies.
Motorized Filter Wheel
Like the filter slide, the motorized wheel holds four 1.0-inch (25.4 mm) diameter filters. The wheel is controlled by our Cornerstone 1/8 or Cornerstone 1/4 m Monochromators. The filter wheel controls are not built into the illuminator housing. If you are using an Apex Illuminator with a manually driven monochromator or motorized monochromator other than an Oriel Cornerstone, choose an Apex Illuminator with manual filter slide.
Mount Optical Chopper in Enclosed Beam Path
The focus of our Apex Illuminators is 3.63 inches (92.2 mm, ±25 mm) in front of the output flange of the housing. This space allows you to place an optical chopper in the beam path. The chopper mounts directly to the output flange of the Illuminator. If you are not using an optical chopper, order the 70625 Light Shield to enclose the beam path between the illuminator and monochromator.
Optical Chopper
With the various wheel options offered, the 75150 Optical Chopper System gives you a range of chopping frequencies from sub-Hz to 3 kHz. The chopper's controller displays the chopping frequency. 1.5-Inch Series female and male flanges let you couple the chopper directly to the illuminator output. The 75150 Chopper System also includes a spacer tube to properly distance the chopper from the monochromator to ensure an enclosed optical path. To hard mount the Apex Illuminator and Oriel Monochromator to a common baseplate (as shown in Fig. 3) order a mounting kit.
Mounting
Apex Illuminators have four adjustable height mounting feet. You can remove the feet and mount the illuminator to a common baseplate, with an Oriel Monochromator, to build a tunable source. All kits include a common baseplate to hold the illuminator and monochromator, a light shield to enclose the beam path, and all the necessary mounting hardware. We offer mounting kits for the following combinations:
- Any Apex Monochromator Illuminator with Cornerstone 130 1/8 m Monochromator
- Any Apex Monochromator Illuminator with Cornerstone 260 1/4 m Monochromator
- Any Apex Monochromator Illuminator with 7250 Monochromator
