Please note that this product family was phased out by the end of June 2011. The products will no longer be available for purchase upon depletion of existing stock.
Newport's LQN Series Laser Diode (LD) modules are designed for use with standard Newport Laser Diode Instrumentation, giving the user the ability to precisely control the laser diode current and temperature. LD Sources can be connected to the Newport Modular Multi-Channel Laser Diode Controller, Model 8000 or Laser Diode Drivers, 500B Series and Model 350B TEC Controller via a standard Y-Cable. Once connected, they can be operated in CW mode by selecting a laser drive current or modulated by using the modulation feature found in most Newport Laser Diode Drivers. The laser temperature can be fixed for precise wavelength stabilization, or varied for wavelength tuning of the laser diode.
Newport offers limited 30-day warranty due to their extreme sensitivity to electrostatic discharge (ESD). A Newport laser diode driver and a temperature controller must be in operation in order to avoid possible diode damage. Otherwise, warranty is voided. Please see Electrical Cables and Accessories for proper cabling products and a grounding wrist strap.

Center Wavelength Tolerances
The LQN series laser diodes are FP (Fabry-Perot) type. Unlike those diodes with frequency stabilization such as DFB (distributed feedback) or an external VBG (volume Bragg grating), the FP lasers typically have large center wavelength tolerances and wide bandwidths.
Center Wavelength Tolerance accuracy for the LQN Series is as follows:
Typical wavelength less than 700 nm, tolerance ±10 nm
Typical wavelength 700-1300 nm, tolerance ±15 nm
Typical wavelength greater than 1300 nm, tolerance ±20 nm
Fine Control of the Laser Module
LQN Series LD Sources provide fine current and temperature control via an external laser driver and a Peltier cooler controller. Note that the laser diode chips are mounted on a Peltier cooler. When in not operation, the cooler becomes an insulator, which can potentially damage the device permanently.
Wide Variety of Laser Modules
They are available at various wavelengths and output power levels, with the choice of either Elliptical (E versions) or Circular (C versions) output beam shape. Circular beams are generated using a micro lens built in the diode laser module.
For those who want laser diode modules with a simple, more economical fixed output power supply LPM and LQx series Laser Diode Modules are available.
