The Ideal Choice for Beam Pickoff Applications

The reflective coating of D-shaped mirrors extends to near the flat edge of the mirror, enabling the separation of closely spaced optical beams. An example application is a folded geometry prism compressor used to shorten the duration of a positively chirped ultrashort laser pulse. As the image shows, the beam entering the prism assemblies passes slightly above the D-shaped mirror. The beam exiting the prism assemblies travels slightly below, and in the same vertical plane as the entering beam, but is then "picked off" by the D-shaped mirror and routed to an autocorrelator. A D-shaped mirror improves the efficiency of such a prism compressor because it enables the entering and exiting beams to be placed much closer to each other than a round mirror would allow. For more information, see our Prism Compressor for Ultrashort Laser Pulses application note.

Fused Silica Substrates

Fused Silica is synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide of extremely high purity. This non-crystalline, colorless silica glass combines a low content of inclusions with high refractive index homogeneity, a very low thermal expansion coefficient, and excellent transmittance in the wavelength regime from UV to NIR. As a result, these mirrors will perform better with temperature fluctuations and is ideal for high-energy laser applications due to its high energy damage threshold. For more information, please see our Optical Materials technical note.

Enhanced Aluminum UV Coating

Our AL.2 UV enhanced aluminum coating is a durable, broadband UV reflector with average reflectivity greater than 90% from 250 – 600 nm. The aluminum film is overcoated with UV transparent magnesium fluoride to prevent oxidation of the metal.

Enhanced Aluminum VIS-NIR Coating

Our ER.1 enhanced aluminum coating may be used wherever a broadband visible and near infrared reflector is needed. A multilayer dielectric stack deposited over the aluminum film boosts reflectance and improves the durability of the coating. Average reflectivity is greater than 93% from 450-700 nm.

Protected Silver VIS-IR Coating

Our ER.2 protected silver coating is composed of a low emissivity silver film fully encapsulated by a multilayer dielectric stack to prevent oxidation. This coating has excellent broadband reflectivity in the IR, while maintaining very good performance in the visible and near IR. Average reflectivity is greater than 96% from 480 – 1100 nm and greater than 98.5% from 1.1 – 20 µm. This silver mirror is a favorite for Ultrafast scientists who want an inexpensive option.

Protected Gold NIR-IR Coating

Our ER.4 protected gold coating is ideal for applications requiring broadband reflectance in the near IR to the far IR. A multilayer dielectric overcoat provides protection to the gold from the environment. Average reflectivity is greater than 96% from 650 – 1700 nm and greater than 98% from 1.7 – 2.0 µm.

Special Handling Required

As the reflective coating extends to near the flat edge of the mirror for pickoff applications, the flat edge is cut very sharp with no bevel. Thus, special care should be taken when handling to avoid injury. Furthermore, other contact with the flat edge should be avoided as much as possible to prevent the mirror from becoming chipped, including mounting in standard mirror mounts. Newport recommends HM-1 or M1-1D Edge Grip mirror mounts for all d-shaped mirrors.
