Oriel® Apex Sources with a Rear Reflector provide the potential for up to 60 % throughput improvement.
The Apex family of broadband fiber illuminators uses refractive optics to ensure superior beam quality and efficiency. These systems are compact in size, economically priced, and very simple to operate. A built-in four-position filter slide holds bandpass or neutral density filters. We offer systems to operate deuterium, arc and quartz tungsten halogen lamps, and infrared elements. Each system is factory pre-set to run the specified lamp, and includes a pre-aligned lamp base. No adjustments are required.
Simple Design and Simple Operation
Apex Sources are defined by their simplicity. A single enclosure houses the electronics, lamp, collecting and focusing optics, and filter slide. Each system is calibrated to run the specified source and hold it at the proper optical height. There are no power supply or lamp adjustments. In fact, there is only an ON/OFF switch; simply install the lamp, turn on the system, and you can begin your work.
This simplicity comes with some compromise in flexibility. Because the systems are dedicated to the specified lamp, you cannot interchange lamps (except for the deuterium systems), although you can replace the lamp as it ages.
Produce Tightly Focused Spot Sizes
Fig. 1 shows the optical path of an Arc Lamp Apex Fiber Illuminator (other versions operate in the same manner). For the D2, arc and QTH lamp systems, we use a fused silica aspheric lens assembly. For the IR Apex Systems, we use a ZnSe aspheric lens assembly, which transmits from 0.6 to 12 µm. Our IR elements emit to 25 µm. If you are working in the longer wavelengths, contact a Sales Engineer to replace the ZnSe lens assembly with a Germanium Assembly. We chose aspheric lenses because of their superior aberration correction and imaging qualities.
These computer designed lens systems are made up of two lens elements. The first lens collimates the source, and the second lens focuses the output to a tightly focused spot size.

F/2 Output Matched to Fused Silica Fibers
Our fused silica fibers have an effective F/# of 1.9 to 2.3 (depending upon the grade of fused silica). We designed these fiber illuminators to have a tightly focused spot in order to minimize coupling losses. Apex Illuminators hold any fiber with 11 mm ferrules, and allow ±1 mm X and Y adjustments. Our fiber bundles all are terminated with 11 mm ferrules. To hold SMA or ST terminated single fibers, you need the 77670 or 77675 Connector. These connectors hold the properly terminated fiber at the output of Apex.
Built-in Filter Slide
These illuminators include a four position filter slide, which holds 1-inch diameter (25.4 mm) filters, up to 0.2 inches (5 mm) thick. The slide can be inserted and removed without removing the illuminator's cover. An interlock switch shuts down power to the system when the slide is removed. The filter slide must be installed for the instrument to operate.
You can buy additional filter slides if you need to switch between more than four filters (note: the illuminator can only support one slide at a time). Each filter position is numbered for easy filter identification.
Mounting
Apex Housings have four leveling feet for free standing use. For hard mounting to an optical table, remove the feet and use the appropriate mounting holes.

*The multiplication factor is a measured parameter that helps in computing the approximate total power of the output in any wavelength band.

Oriel Lamp Housings are designed to operate in a typical laboratory environment (typically 68 to 76 degrees F, up to 45% relative humidity). Temperature and humidity outside of typical laboratory range can contribute to cooling and ignition faults. Cooling issues will cause the over temperature sensor to open, and ignition problems will result from high humidity. Contact a Newport Technical Representative for more information if operating outside the suggested range.
