Oriel® Apex Sources with a Rear Reflector are now available. Potentially up to 60 % throughput improvement can be achieved, as a portion of the backwards emitted radiation is captured to the output.
Apex is our answer to Researchers who need a simple-to-use, low wattage, economically priced UV-NIR source. This new family of orc sources uses an integrated housing - the lamp, electronics and condensing optics are in a single enclosure. The lamp is held in a pre-aligned base - no need for lamp adjustments. The power supply is pre-set to operate the specified lamp - you don't need to adjust the current or voltage. Simply install the lamp, turn the source on, and you're ready to begin working.
We offer Apex systems to run 50 to 200 W Hg, Xe, and Hg(Xe) lamps, and the new EmArc Enhanced Metal Arc lamp. We also offer Apex Deuterium Lamp SourcesDeuterium Apex Systems, Apex Quartz Tungsten Halogen Sources, and Apex Infrared Light Sources.
Why Apex?
Newport offers six families of arc lamp sources. Apex is the smart option if you need a highly stable and collimated broadband source, but don't need the flexibility and user features of our .
Choose an Apex system if don't need to interchange between lamps (Apex systems are fixed power sources, therefore you cannot switch between lamp types); you don't need the irradiance of medium to high power arc lamps (Apex only runs 50 to 200 W lamps); and you don't need all the user features of a stand-alone power supply (such as remote control via a PC and display of lamp operating parameters).
Principle of Operation
Fig. 1 shows the simple optical path of an Apex Arc Lamp Source. A fused silica aspheric lens, transmissive from 200 - 2500 nm) collects the lamp's radiation and collimates it. The output is a highly collimated, 1.3 inch diameter (33 mm) beam. You can then re-focus the output with one of our Secondary Focusing Lens Assemblies for Light Sources. If you are focusing into a fiber, use our Apex Fiber Illuminators. If you are focusing onto a monochromator slit, use an Apex Monochromator Illuminators. These dedicated systems are more efficient than turning a collimated source into a fiber or monochromator illumintor, as they have fewer optical components, resulting in fewer surface reflections. The output flange of the Apex housing is a 1.5 Inch Series female flange; all the 1.5 Inch Series male flanged accessories couple directly to the output of Apex. A small fan ensures the proper lamp operating temperature.
F/2.2 Aspheric Lens Assembly
Oriel Light Sources traditionally have the condensing lens assembly in an enclosed barrel on the outside of the housing. With Apex, we built the lens system inside the housing (as shown in Fig. 1). We chose an F/2.2 aspheric lens as the condensing element because it has negligible spherical aberration, high throughput, and produces superior collimation.
The multiplication factor for this condenser is 0.05. The multiplication factor is a measured parameter that helps in computing the approximate total power of the collimated output in any wavelength band. Note, Apex Sources do not have a rear reflector; do not include the 60% rear reflector contribution, when calculating the output from an Apex Source.
Ozone Free Lamps Are Standard
Many of these Arc Lamp Systems are shipped with ozone free lamps. If you require shorter wavelengths, contact a Sales Engineer to replace the lamp with an ozone producing model.
Mounting
Apex Housings have four leveling feet for free standing use. The feet allow 0.5 inch (13 mm) height adjustment. For hard mounting to an optical table, remove the feet and use the appropriate mounting holes.
Safety Considerations
Arc lamps emit UV radiation, even the ozone free models. Personnel working around these sources should wear protective eyewear and gloves. UV radiation can cause burns to the eyes and skin.

Oriel Lamp Housing is designed to operate in a typical laboratory environment (typically 68 to 76 degrees F, up to 45% relative humidity). Temperature and humidity outside of typical laboratory range can contribute to cooling and ignition faults. Cooling issues will cause the over temperature sensor to open, and ignition problems will result from high humidity.
