DescriptionSpecifications Models

The AG-LS25 is a high precision miniature linear stage featuring Newport’s new, Agilis™ piezo step direct motor. The AG-LS25 provides the benefits of a motorized component, ultra-high adjustment sensitivity and convenient remote operation, at a price and size comparable to that of a high quality manual stage.

The AG-LS25 features 12 mm travel in an ultra-compact and light weight package compatible with our SDS25 and DS25 manual linear stages, using the supplied M2 screws and washers. Precision motion is achieved by calibrated, pre-stressed linear ball bearings. The thermally matched stainless steel design and precision manufactured bearing surfaces provide ripple-free, low friction linear travel and angular deviations better than 100 µrad in any axis.

The Agilis piezo motor is directly coupled to the moving carriage with no intermediate screw or gear. When idle, the holding force of the motor locks the position for true set and forget long term stability. Compared with alternative screw driven designs, the AG-LS25 compromises neither adjustment speed nor life time, and has no backlash. In contrast to ultrasonic motors, the Agilis non-resonant motor makes small incremental adjustments more predictable with 50 nm incremental motion capability, ideal for ultra-sensitive alignments. For absolute positioning, for instance returning to a set position, the AG-LS25 features a precision electrical limit switch. This switch acts not only as a safety device, it also allows measuring the average step size by counting the number of steps from the left travel limit to the right travel limit and vice versa. As the average step size of the AG-LS25 under the same conditions is repeatable, it is possible to move to an absolute position without the need for expensive encoder feedback. High level commands to determine the current position and to move to an absolute position (x% of travel) are integrated in the Agilis electronics, see Agilis™ Series Controllers for further information.

Why Agilis Stages?

Mechanical friction and the effects of human operation limit the precision of many optical adjustments. In theory, it is possible to achieve sub arc-s adjustment sensitivity with very fine mechanics and differential screws. However, in practice, the lateral forces applied to a component during an adjustment often have an excessive effect, making alignments lengthy and frustrating. Also, many optical experiments are extremely sensitive to environmental factors and provide consistent results only when well shielded against external influences.

Motorized stages overcome the limits of manual components, but are typically costly and bulky, restricting their use for systems integration or simple remote operation in tight spaces. Agilis stages provide a lower cost solution in a miniature size, without compromising adjustment sensitivity, speed, or position stability.

Agilis stages feature Newport’s new, proprietary, non-resonant piezo direct motors. These highly integrated motors are directly coupled to the moving platen. When idle, spring forces lock the position for true set and forget long term stability. Agilis stages have a faster adjustment speed than alternative screw driven designs and are free of the problems associated with backlash or hysteresis. In contrast to ultrasonic motors, the Agilis non-resonant motor concept makes small adjustments more predictable with its 50 nm incremental motion capability, ideal for ultra-sensitive optical alignments.

Use the 339233 bracket for XZ and XYZ configurations. For XY assemblies of AG-LS25 stages, use 4 x TC M3x4 screws supplied with each stage.

B-Series adaptor plates for mounting AG-LS25 to optical tables and other stages with 40 x 40 mm size (see www.newport.com for details). For mounting AG-LS25 stages to these plates, use 4 x Tc M2x4 screws plus washers supplied with each AG-LS25 stage.
